Have you ever heard a certain songs that make you feel as though it was written just for you? I have. And when that happens I tend to get a tad over zealous in my excitement. Below are those song lyrics that have changed my world.
For this list, I’m going to concentrate on songs that specifically have lyrics. I am a HUGE fan of instrumental music, especially anything done by M83 or Hans Zimmer, so I’m going to have to create an entirely separate list for songs for that genre. Until then, headphones in, world off, and enjoy my picks below!
For My Help by Hayden Calnin
I first heard this song in the TV show The 100 and I swear to you, it changed my life forever (and how much I began to love the show). Hayden Calnin has been pursuing a career in music ever since his father put a guitar in his hands at age 14. Now at age 22, Hayden Calnin writes and produces his own songs at home.
Silent screams are hurting me
Just ask for my help
Take a whole or a part of me
And ask for my help
Prelude To a Kiss by Alicia Keys
Although technically not a song, Prelude To a Kiss came out from Alicia Keys album As I Am in 2007. It mainly features Keys iconically playing on the piano, but it’s so touching and beautiful that it is my favourite piece to come from this album.
Sometimes I feel like I don’t belong anywhere…
And it’s a long, long way to Heaven but I gotta get there.
Can you send an angel?
Can you send me an angel to guide me.
Youth by Adventure Club
This song was done by Foxes, however the version that I listen to is remixed by Adventure Club, so I tell a little white lie when I say it’s done by Adventure Club #SorryNotSorry. I’ve been in this moment of my life where birthday’s are no longer something to be celebrated. I am officially faced with my mortality and have this eminent fear that all the best years are behind me …which I really hope isn’t the case, because I’m afraid I’ve wasted my youth away (see what I did there?).
Don’t tell me our youth is running out
It’s only just begun
Coward by Hayden Calnin
Whoopsie, it looks like we’ve got another Hayden Calnin song (can you tell that I’m obsessed with him yet?), after I heard his song For My Help, I went on a rampage to find any and everything else he’s made. And while I told myself I’d limit this list to one song per artist, I had to include this as well. I’ve been known to listen to this song on repeat at work for hours straight. It’s a problem. But a healthy one ☺
On your knees and drown
Look left, see death
Staring back at you
She cries like a drama queen
While dying next to me, he;
He’ll hold her closely
While she falls asleep
She floats, I don’t
Now she’s gone
Physical, magical, you’ve left
Ride by Lana Del Rey
Now, of course it’s not possible to have a list like this without anything from Lana Del Rey. And as we’ve established from an earlier post, Ride is my favourite song by her. And as I have outlined the beauty in her lyrics before, these picks will be different. These are the lyrics that I felt related to my life personally, whereas the lyrics I choose before where the ones that expressed personal things about Lana (so don’t get it twisted!). Ride is a song that expresses freedom in life and pain in life. Much like how I feel about the song Youth above, Ride makes me anxious about my past, present and future.
Been tryin’ hard not to get into trouble,
But I, I’ve got a war in my mind
I’m tired of feeling like I’m fucking crazy
I’m tired of driving ‘til I see stars in my eyes
It’s all I’ve got to keep myself sane, baby
So I just ride, I just ride
Live fast. Die young. Be wild. And have fun.
I believe in the person I want to become.
Have you created a life for yourself where you can experience
Lullabies by Yuna
Yunalis Mat Zara’ai began writing her own songs at age 14 and began performing them at 19. She auditioned for the first season of the show One in a Million, but eventually got cut, although clearly that didn’t affect her drive at all. I connect with Lullabies because I’ve felt that feeling of caring for someone who either A: wants nothing to do with me B: has no idea, or C: falls for my friend #Winning.
Like lullabies you are,
Forever in mind.
I see you in all,
The pieces in my life.
Though you weren’t mine,
You were my first love.
Touch by Daughter
Daughter is one of my new fave artists, they’re a folk band from London that was formed in 2010. I have a couple of their songs, but it’s Touch that I connect with the most, mainly because I’m single and have no friends (#ForeverAlone) so I share everything with you guys!
Love hunt me down
I can’t stand to be so dead behind the eyes
Give me touch
‘Cause I’ve been missing it
I’m dreaming of
Strangers kissing me in the night
What lyrics in songs felt like they were directly about you?
