You know how there are those over the top stores that you want to see purely for the Wow factor and not so much for the shopping? That’s what these guys are all about!
1. Dior in Seoul, South Korea
Location: Seoul’s Cheongdam-dong district, Korea
French architect Christian de Portzamparc designed Dior’s 6-floor flagship boutique in Seoul, South Korea, while Peter Marino created the interior. This is the biggest flagship Dior boutique in Asia to date. Portzamparc designed the building with the idea of fabric being woven together in the Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu district. The boutique has an art gallery and a Café Dior by Pierre Hermé. It’s a part of an exhibition called “Esprit Dior” at Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
2. Louis Vuitton in Singapore
Location: The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
Louis Vuitton is well established in Singapore with four store locations, however, its flagship store Island Maison (also called the floating island) that resides on the water next to Marina Bay Sands stands as its most unique store. Louis Vuitton is a brand that focuses on travel and luggage essentials, this flagship (designed by Peter Marino) is in the shape of a boat and features an art gallery with travel themes, an outdoor patio, private lounge, and the “Travel Room” that sells travel luggage and accessories.
3. Burberry in London
Location: 21 Regent Street, London
According to Burberry’s CEO Angela Ahrendts, “Walking through the doors is just like walking into our website. It is Burberry World live.” This flagship store is all about bringing the digital world to reality with screens of Burberry’s runway, beauty looks, and information about products on screen in the fitting rooms. This store is one of the only places where you can buy limited edition products (like the exclusive Regent Street gold collection, made in honour of this store) and runs weekly events to showcase emerging musical, art, and film talent. The building itself incorporates structures in London dating back to the 19th century and has a massive Greek marble staircase in the center. This store took 2 years to create.
4. Louis Vuitton Ginza Namiki Dori Store in Tokyo
Location: 104-0061 Tokyo, Japan
Designed by Gwenael Nicolas of Curiosity and Aoki Jun, Louis Vuitton’s Ginza Namiki Dori store only features their luxury products as items on display. They are encased behind glass window displays in hopes to blend together the worlds of art and luxury. The exterior wall of the store is incased in glassfiber-reinforced concrete (GRC) that comes straight from India with cut out sections that light up periodically throughout the day.
5. Prada Aoyama in Tokyo
Location: 107-0062 Aoyama district Tokoyo, Japan
Prada Aoyama is the first building by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron that features the entire structure as a single unit. The diagonal green glass covers the entire 6-floor building, which is pretty cool since parts of the glass curve to make it look like the building has bubbles. Menswear, womenswear, fragrances, and even sportswear can be found at this location.
6. Valentino in Rome
Location: Piazza di Spagna, Rome
The largest flagship store in Rome, this Valentino shop is next to sixteenth century Palazzo Mignanelli, which coincidentally, is the creative headquarters of the label. Developed by Valentino Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the store was created by architect David Chipperfield. Their vision used materials including Venetian terrazzo with Carrara chippings, marble, and leather to display products. Two marble staircases connect the women’s floor with the men’s. This Valentino shop was the first to offer made-to-measure denim for men.
7. H&M in New York
Location: Herald Square, New York
H&M opened their 13th store in New York City this year, debuting it as the largest H&M store in the world. Macy’s better watch out for some serious competition, as this massive store is located directly across the street from it. Here’s what you need to know: it has a 35-foot glass wall with LCD screen, 40 fitting rooms, four floors, two elevators, a lingerie section, a kids department, and will be expanding in their beauty departing this fall. Plus, let’s not forget that their recent collab with Balmain will be sold at this location as well.
8. Chanel Istanbul Boutique, Turkey
Location: Abdi İpekçi Caddesi Nazem Apartment #65, Turkey
In 2011, this stood as Chanel’s first stand-alone boutique in Istanbul and is located in the premiere shopping district, Nişantaşı. The shop is divided into different ‘salon’ spaces, giving each collection its own atmosphere for customers to shop. This is the only location in Turkey to find everything you need from Chanel: handbags, accessories, clothes, fragrances, and off the runway merchandise.
9. Puma City
Constructed by LOT-EK Architecture & Design, this unique shop consists of twenty-four shipping containers stacked together to create a three level store complete with outdoor terraces, a boar and lounge, as well as two full retail spaces inside. This transportable store is over 11,000 square-feet and designed to be easily moved and re-assembled to different locations around the world.
10. Alexander McQueen in Monaco
Location: No. 10, Pavilion 5, Jardin des Boulingrins, Monaco
Sarah Burton and Alexander McQueen created this flagship store in the Principle of Monaco, with the architecture and interior designed by David Collins Studio. The store was made to embody the shape and style of the “Armadillo shoe” with rounded walls and marble floors. Spread over 2 floors, this 2,100 square foot store offers a selection of runway and commercial and accessories pieces from men and womenswear collections.
11. Lurdes Bergada & Syngman Cucala in Barcelona, Spain
Location: 557, Avinguda Diagonal, Barcelona, Spain
Lurdes Bergada and her son, Syngman Cucala, created two separate spaces for this OTT store with designers Ignasi Llauradó and Eric Dufourd. In keeping with the brand of industrial and minimalistic style, the store holds simplistic designs of Lurdes Bergada (for women) and the casual style of Syngman Cucala (for men). The wall is constructed with beach wood to form an igloo like construction that is the focal point of the store. The rest of the space uses concrete and open concept designs to create a clean and concise atmosphere. This location is one of four in Spain.
12. Armani Fifth Avenue in New York City
Location: 717 Fifth Avenue (56th Street), New York
Architects Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas created this 4-floor glass Armani building in the heart of the city; standing at 164 feet long and 45 feet high. The store features retail space, a bar, and restaurant for shoppers. Standing in the center rests a structured steel staircase that connects the accessories, women’s swimwear, cosmetics & beauty products, selective products such as Armani Classics and Eveningwear, men’s fashion, shoes, and a private VIP fitting room.
13. L’Oreal in Stockholm, Sweden
Location: Birger Jarlsgatan 25, 111 45 Stockholm, Sweden
Designed by IAMZ Design Studio with Ahmed Elseyofi as the head architect, this building stands 6 floors high and is 600 square feet. The building design hopes to reflect the fluidity and natural aspect of beauty and cosmetics that the French brand encompasses.
14. Coach in Los Angeles, California
Location: 327 North Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, California
Located on the iconic block of Beverly Hills lined with palm trees, this staple store holds complete Coach collections for men and women like bags, outerwear, and watches. The interior was designed to embody the chic streets of New York while the exterior has an open California vibe. Designed by Hirsh Construction Corp. don’t be surprised to see the stars shopping at this location.
15. Apple Store in Hong Kong, China
Location: International Finance Centre 8 Finance Street Central, Hong Kong
Apple is known for going above and beyond with the retail stores in order to showcase the brand’s sleek new designs, and Hong Kong’s first Apple Store in the International Finance Centre Mall & Airport Express Hong Kong Station (IFC Mall) is no different, especially with the breathtaking view of the cityscape in the background.
16. Yves Saint Laurent in Shanghai
Location: Nanjing W Road, 1601 Jing’an, Shanghai
Hedi Slimane (the creative director of Yves Saint Laurent Paris) desgined a new store for the brand in Shanghai. Slimane’s vision was to use white and black colours juxtiposed with glass and marble in the interior of the store to reference French Art Deco and the Union des Artistes Modernes movement.
17. Ted Baker in San Diego
Location: Fashion Valley, 7007 Friars Rd #1030, San Diego, CA
Known for his whimsical designs, Ted Baker’s San Diego location is no exception. Imagine Alice in Wonderland with a hint of English romanticism, and you’ve found yourself in Ted Baker’s San Diego creation. Hoping to establish a sense of “retail theatre” this locations’ design is an extension of the products themselves. You can shop for Baker’s staple Pashion suit in lustrous metallic tones for men and tailored wide leg trousers for women specifically at this location.
