The Spice Girls were a girl band that was way ahead of the times, fighting for girl power and empowerment for women everywhere way back when. As a child, I would sing anthems like “Wannabe” without every stopping to think what they were singing about. And now, 20 years later, “Wannabe” has been remade by charity Project Everyone.
They created a video that displays women from all over the world telling government leaders what they want an end to violence against women and to quality education for girls.
One of my all time #GirlCrushes, Victoria Beckham has quickly endorsed the video, stating that, “I think this film is a wonderful idea,” she said in a statement. “How fabulous it is that after 20 years, the legacy of the Spice Girls’ ‘Girl Power’ is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation.”
The video aims to prompt women from all over the world to tweet a picture demanding what they’d like to improve their lives using the hashtag #WhatIReallyReallyWant. And what’s even better is that the images will then be presented to the UN General Assembly in September.
