Okay wait what? I always knew that The Twilight series came to author Stephenie Meyer’s in a dream, but I had NO IDEA that the Mortal Instrument series, by Cassandra Clare, was based off of Harry Potter fanfiction that Clare wrote!
So Mortal Instrument is a book series, failed film, and newly revamped TV series that follows Clary Fray as she discovers another world of demons, vampires, and Shadowhunters. It’s your typical teen story that I can’t help but love.
I was pretty shocked to find out that the Shadowhunter world was pretty much all created from the mind of the amazing J.K Rowling, as it was originally fanfiction of Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ginny Weasley. Like many other insanely dumb people out there, Clare decided that Harry and Hermione were meant to be together rather than her and Ron (which is absolute bull in my mind). And so began The Draco Trilogy, much of which was apparently plagiarized. Thus, forcing Clare to take down all three stories and start from scratch with The Mortal Instruments.
However, it looks like Clare just can’t catch a break. She’s been called out on plagiarism once again with this series, arguing that the topics, characters, and fantastical Shadowhunter world she’s created is a little too similar to that of the Dark Hunters series by author Sherrilyn Kenyon. At first I just rolled my eyes to this, but once I actually looked into the Dark Hunters series, I realized that the similarities are just too great. Here’s the synopsis of the series, stop me if it at all sounds familiar:
We are Darkness. We are Shadow.
We are the Rulers of the Night.
We, alone, stand between mankind and those who would see mankind destroyed. We are the Guardians.
The Soulless Keepers.
Our souls were cast out so that we would not forewarn the Daimons we pursue. By the time they see us coming, it’s too late.
The Daimons and Apollites know us. They fear us. We are death to all those who prey upon the humans.
Neither Human, nor Apollite, we exist beyond the realm of the Living, beyond the realm of the Dead.
We are the Dark-Hunters.
And we are eternal.
Oh. Snap. If that isn’t exactly the same as Mortal Instrument than I don’t know what is. And what’s hardest to stomach is that this series came out about 9 years prior to Clare’s.
While this completely changed my world when I found out, is it bad to say that I still love The Mortal Instrument series? However, I will be checking out these Dark Hunters as well. I’m curious to read them and see just how similar the two are.
