I’ve been following the Brock Turner case religiously. For those of you that don’t know, Brock Turner is a rapist who was only given a mere 6 months in jail (of which he only spent 3 months) for his crime of sexually assaulting an unconscious 23-year-old woman at Stanford University. A crime he would have continued had 2 men not stopped him, tackled him to the ground, and waited for police.
Judge Aaron Persky only sentenced Turner to 6 months in jail because was concerned about the “impact” jail time would have on his future…This was the most ridiculous ruling on the planet. But according to Turner’s asshole of a father, the conviction is “a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.” I hate this entire family.
And this isn’t the first time Persky has ruled in favour of an athlete, because let’s not forget that the media labelled Tuner as an athlete with a promising career in the Olympics. And, of course, he went to Stanford University, a point that the media seemed to think I needed to know about a RAPIST (thankfully he’ll never make it to the Olympics after what he pulled). Persky was part of the athletics program at Stanford as a lacrosse coach, so it’s clear that he has an inability to remain impartial in the face of his personal prejudices towards middle class, heterosexual, white, male athletes. Thankfully, this idiot of a judge was pulled off of another rape case thanks to an online petition aimed at getting the Judge removed (for more information or to join the petition, click here). So at least there’s some small justice in the world.
Turner is sadly back at home and Tweeting amazing amounts of bullshit about how he’s “blessed”, “thankful”, “turning over a new leaf”, and “encourages the protesters”. I may barf.
The protesters are those amazing citizens that are having none of it when it comes to this man. They aren’t down for his lack of empathy towards his victim, they aren’t down for his embarrassingly short time spent in prison, and they aren’t down to have a rapist living in their neighbourhood.
During the trail, Turner’s victim (who choose to remain anonymous) read the most powerful letter to him on how his actions have deeply affected her, her family, and other woman around the world who don’t have a voice on this matter. And I’m not talking women from other countries, this happens everyday in North America where rapist walk away with no issues because it’s the women’s fault, or she was dressed like a slut therefore she was asking for it. As a woman it’s okay to be attacked because if you’re walking home alone at night, you’re encouraging men by doing so. My personal favourite is hearing when people say you didn’t say no or yes so therefore it’s okay. Right, so I’ll just break into someone’s house while they’re asleep and steal all there stuff. When I get dragged to court I’ll say “Well they didn’t tell me to stop, and they were walking around flashing their beautiful clothes and car so I took that as an invitation that they wanted me to steal from them.” Makes perfect sense.
Turner’s decided to blame his actions on the “party culture” of “drinking”. He refused to take any blame for what he did, instead arguing that he’d stay away from alcohol. I’m sorry, but if you were so overcome by alcohol in this insane “party culture” that you’ve been dragged into, why did you run away when you were spotted? He knew what he was doing was wrong, and that’s why he ran, and that’s why no one believes his bullshit remorse pity party he’s on. I fear for the world. We need to put a stop to things like Brock Turner and Judge Aaron Persky; where is the love guys?
Brock Turner, you’re a rapist and an asshole. And you’ll never understand until it happens to you, but until then, at least take some responsibility.
