Johnny Depp Joins Fantastic Beasts Sequel

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – the Harry Potter series prequel and/or spinoff written by the Wizarding World creator herself, J.K. Rowling (all hail!) – has cast Johnny Depp to join the sure to be hit sequel.

That’s right kiddies, apparently Captain Jack Sparrow will be co-starring in the next Fantastic Beasts film, however they’re keeping the plot of the sequel and character of Depp under-wraps for the time being. As the biggest Harry Potter nerd out there, I’m beyond excited to see this go down! But until then, here’s what we know about the upcoming film, set to hit theatres November 17, 2016.

There have been hints that (as this film takes place in the 1920s) we know that the timeline takes place during the rise of Gellert Grindelwald, the dark wizard that Albus Dumbledore was friends with (and most definitely loved and/or dated) when the pair were younger. Grindelwald was the dark wizard before Voldemort who was obsessed with the Deathly Hallows as he (and Dumbledore at the time) believed that Magic is Might and that wizards should rule over Muggles. After the accidental death of Dumbledore’s sister Ariana, he turned a new leaf and dedicated his life to living peacefully among Muggles and eventually defeating Grindelwald and winning the Elder Wand (one of the Deathly Hallows) in the process.

Everyone’s speculating that somehow, Grindelwald will become involved in these films, as he was rising to power during this time! But before you get excited, remember that Grindelwald rose to power in Europe, while Fantastic Beasts takes place in US…so there’s that.

But, let’s not forget about cast member Ezra Miller (from Perks of Being a Wallflower and soon to play The Flash in Ben Affleck’s upcoming Justice League film) discuss this very same theory! So it’s possible! Grindelwald may have a place in Fantastic Beasts after all, and perhaps Johnny Depp will play him!

Are you excited about this news? I bet you can’t wait for November.
