What makes a good show? Character development, strong plots and of course a good cliffhanger to keep you wanting more! Check out my top 10 list of best TV cliffhangers, and spoilers below! You’ve been warned.
I’ve limited myself to only one season per show, so while some shows have multiple cliffhangers in different seasons, I’m only going to focus on the best of the best! And remember, these are purely based on my opinion, and only on shows I’ve seen!
10. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5 “The Gift”
Buffy is one of my favourite strong female characters, and while she could be annoying at times (especially in Season 5 as this one of my least favourites seasons) seeing her die was pretty devastating. Especially since she died for her beyond annoying sister Dawn. It was a true test of sacrifice, love and emotions that I can barely put into words. Season 5 had it’s flaws, but this cliffhanger just about made up for it.
9. Avatar, The Last Airbender Season 2 “Crossroads of Destiny”
If you haven’t watched this amazing animated series (turned awful film) then trust me, you’re missing out. Avatar The Last Airbender followed the last air bender Aang and his friends as they set out to save the world from the Fire Nation. Season 2 ended with Aang being struck by lightening from the evil (but amazing character) Azula. Zuko went fully evil and we got one hell of a final battle. This finale just made the anticipation for Season 3 that much higher. (PS music in video is not in actual episode)
8. Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 “Now Or Never”
Be honest, you bawled your eyes out when Izzie was in that elevator and saw George right? The whole episode saw everyone running around trying to deal with their problems while there’s a man slowly dying at the hospital. Turns out that man was the one and only 007 aka George, and it was either him or Izzie that was going to be the first major cast member to be killed off (and certainly not the last). Will it be Izzie or will if be George? The question on everyone’s tearful mind.
7. X-Men: Evolution Season 2 “Day of Reckoning”
I love those superhero battles, and no one does it better than cartoon shows (although Captain America: Civil War was pretty damn epic!). This X-Men TV show ended things well with the promise of an epic battle between Magneto’s team and the X-Men. And just when things were getting good, he brought the sentinels into the mix, the mansion got destroyed and no one knew what to do. Damn, this was such a good show!
6. Fringe Season 2 “Over There, Part 2”
Ahhh, good ol’ Fringe. A J.J Abrams show that was severely underestimated. Season 2 and Season 3 were some next level amazing! This finale brought our team over to the other universe to bring Peter home and meet their doppelgängers. However, just when you think the team is safe and sound and that Olivia and Peter would finally be together, you see that the wrong one has come over to our side. And Olivia’s being experimented on “over there”.
5. Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 “The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1”
And what’s a list without one of the most iconic TV cliffhangers, Star Trek: TNG took things to new levels when they turned The Borg into the biggest threat the Federation’s ever faced. And assimilating Picard only to have the episode ending with Riker yelling fire? Oh sweet Jesus, I still get chills.
4. Alias Season 2 “The Telling”
Back at it with another J.J Abrams show, Alias is one of my all time favourites. Season 2 was a huge standout for me as it introduced Sydney’s mother, but nothing I repeat nothing was better than Sydney fighting off the clone of her best friend only to wake up 3 years later in China to a married Vaughn. Oh. Snap.
3. The Walking Dead Season 6 “Something To Fear”
Pretty sure this cliffhanger had the world on standstill. Who did Negan kill? Will it really be Glenn from the graphic novel, how will Maggie survive now. TWD captivated us from the moment Negan walked out of the trailer, until months later when he bashed Glenn and Abraham’s head in. Probably the greatest moment in the shows history, and that’s truly saying something.
2. Lost Season 3 “Through the Looking Glass”
We have to go back to the island! Words we never thought we’d hear Jack utter on the hit show Lost (yet another Abrams show, are you seeing a pattern here?), but somehow he did. This episode tried to play mind games with us by thinking it was just your average flashback, but the minute Kate stepped out of that car, all bets were off. How did they leave? Why do they have to go back? Who’s funeral did Jack attend? WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. HELL?
1. Battlestar Galactica Season 3 “Crossroads, Part 2”
BSG, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen to date. Like The Walking Dead, I loved that while humanity was on the run and the verge of being extinct, the true villain was humanity. The show was like a psychological study on humans that just happened to be set in space with a SciFi spin. When 4 of the final 5 are discovered and Lee sees Kara is alive (well sorta, she’s actually an angel) my heart just about stopped. Let me tell you, I had to download that version of “All Along The Watchtower” and listen to it nonstop on repeat. Omg, the feels!
