Marvel Phase 3 is in full effect, and with all the hype surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, I’m surprised Marvel has found time to promote and Thor: Ragnarok. Yet here we are!
I think it’s safe to say that this will be a different kind of Thor film, it promises to dig deeper into the world of Asgard (which was one of my favourite things about Thor: The Dark World) and introduces some strong female leads.
Casting Cate Blanchett as the Goddess of Death Hela was pure genius; I think it’s going to be gold. She looks so bad ass in the promo picture and I can’t wait to see what she’ll bring to the table. Hela was a goddess who’d often try to expand her power to the dead in Valhalla. Originally she’s killed by Odin to save Thor, but later brought back to life, as Thor was convinced they needed a balance of life and death. I’m interested to see if that will play into the film.
Natalie Portman won’t be reprising her role as Jane Foster, and to be honest that doesn’t bother me one little bit. I think Portman is a superb actress, but she seems to take herself a tad too seriously. She doesn’t seem like the type to be involved with such a long Marvel process, returning for multiple films at end. It never made sense to me having her in the Marvel Cinematic World. Replacing her will be the talented Tessa Thompson, taking on the role of Valkyrie.
Valkyrie is a love interest of Thor; she was in a group of warrior goddesses that would worship the Asgardian gods and choose which of the fallen would be worthy of Valhalla. I’m interested to see how her character will differ from that of Jane and Sif, and to see where Thor’s relationship will go with Sif and how they’ll address Portman’s absence. Sif and Thor have a very important romance that should most definitely be addressed. I’m surprised that she won’t be Thor’s main love interest this time around, I guess we’ll chalk that up to the actresses busy schedule with her new show Blindspot.
This film will also introduce Karl Urban’s Skurge. I’m a big fan of Urban, and can’t wait to see him in this new role. I don’t know much about the character Skurge, except that he’s an exceptional warrior and half Asgardian. To be honest, Urban could be playing a rock and I’d be excited. Here’s what we know so far:
- Thor will be fighting once more against The Hulk, but this time in a gladiator battle! Anyone else hope there’s a World War Hulk comic book crossover?! Because Hulk is totally getting his classic Planet Hulk armour in this film!
- Ragnarok’ refers to a series of cataclysmic events that lead to the deaths of major characters, so I’m thinking someone important to Thor is going to die. Like, say Odin? That would be sad to loose 2 parents in 2 films, but it would be the perfect leeway for Thor to take his place as king. Or maybe even the death of the beloved Loki.
- Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role of Doctor Strange, as we saw in the hilarious end credits of the Doctor Strange film.
- Jeff Goldblum has been cast as the Grandmaster, an ancient being who’s all about games and being a trickster. Can’t wait to see what he’ll have up his sleeves!
What do you think of Thor: Ragnarok? Are you excited for Phase 3?
