As one of my all time fave DC characters, this is some pretty amazing news that needs to be celebrated.
While the DC Cinematic universe isn’t quite shaping up to be the monster house that is Marvel, I’m still holding out hope that Aquaman will be good. And with this new casting news on one of my favourite villains, Black Manta, it looks promising.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has now confirmed his role as Black Manta right before pre production for the film starring Jason Momoa as the title role has begun. This is pleasant news as so far, only Momoa, Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master), and Willem DaFoe (Vulko) have been confirmed as members of the cast. As well as the recent reveal that Nicole Kidman will play Aquaman’s mother.
Abdul-Mateen is relatively unknown to me as an actor; and I’m glad for it, there’s something so refreshing about seeing a fresh face put such an iconic villain to the big screen for the first time.
Black Manta was first and foremost a freedom fighter for his people against the oppressor (who he considered to be Aquaman). However, their characters evolved as the times did, making Aquaman less of a racist bigot and more of a powerful king, while Black Manta became less of a aggressive Martin Luther King visionary and more of a killer.
