Top 10 Marvel Cinematic Universe Films So Far

It’s been 10 years in the making, and Marvel has done the impossible! Made a cohesive universe to feature some of their best superheroes. And with the release of Infinity War, I thought it would be fun to look back at my top 10 picks for the best MCU films so far.

10. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange was a really good film, but for some reason I’ve only seen it once. I enjoyed it while watching because it introduced an entire new level to the MCU. Magic. Thor touched on it in earlier films saying science and magic go hand in hand in his world, but we really got a glimpse at just how deep magic runs in the MCU. The visuals were outstanding and Mads Mikkelsen’s villain Kaecilius while not the most relevant, was engaging. The only reason it’s so far down my list is while I enjoyed it, I never really had the urge to watch it again.

9. Thor

Many people didn’t enjoy the first two Thor films, and while I agree with Thor: Dark World not being the best, I actually really enjoyed Thor. We finally got to leave Earth and see different worlds in the MCU. Thor showed us just how far Marvel was willing to go with regards to space and higher beings.

When we first meet Thor he’s a spoiled rich kid with a lot to learn before becoming king. This was ultimately an introduction to the hero Thor would become. It’s also bittersweet because Thor has truly lost the most in the MCU, so when we go back to the beginning when he had his parents, planet, friends and brother it’s a lot to take in.

8. Guardians of The Galaxy

This was a big chance Marvel took and it totally paid off. The Guardians were a pretty obscure group of people that most (myself included) knew nothing about. But, if Thanos was to be the big bad, they had no choice but to introduce the team that has his two daughters Gamora and Nebula.

Guardians was fresh and hilarious. It brought together a group of misfit toys and invited us to join them on an adventure. I went back and forth between the first Guardians and the second, but I ultimately chose this one. While the second one had a much better villain (can you ever go wrong with Kurt Russell?), I felt some of the comedy was a tad much, making me enjoy the first Guardians more.

7. Iron Man

This is the film that started them all. Iron Man was Marvel redemption story. They managed to take a pretty lame character and turn him into one of the most recognizable ones in the world. Iron Man was the beginning of something epic. Marvel took their time, and 10 years later has become a force to be reckoned with. And even now, this film stands as one of the greats. Not to mention, perfectly casting Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man was simply perfection.

6. Thor Ragnarok

Thor came back in a major way with this film. As I mentioned earlier, people weren’t too impressed with his previous films. And while he’s one of the strongest Avengers, he never really shined in the earlier Marvel films. All that changed with Ragnarok. Like Guardians, this film was fun, full of colours and packed with jokes. Thor became a likeable character that had grown up so much since his first film. The Hulk also got his moment to shine as a character, bringing us the closest we will ever be to seeing a Planet Hulk film.

Marvel has been plagued with some pretty forgettable villains, but that all changed with Cate Blanchets’ god of death Hela. A villain that Thor himself was unable to defeat.

5. Avengers

Getting into the top 5 now. Avengers was ever fan girl and fan boys dream. We finally got to see the group of heroes we’ve been following for years assemble. And it was perfection. We got to see the power of S.H.I.E.L.D and the realistic outcome of bringing all these heroes and strong personalities together; of course they’d clash. We were introduced to another casting of The Hulk, and his chemistry and dynamic with Tony was flawless.

Now, how can I discuss this without mentioning one crucial element – Loki. Marvel delivered the perfect villain with Loki all the while hinting at the Infinity Stones and Thanos. People really didn’t think we’d ever get a better one. Little did they know, one was just around the corner.

4. Avengers Infinity War

The excited surrounding Avengers was nothing compared to what surrounded Infinity War. We were finally going to see Thanos. And what’s better, Marvel casted Josh Brolin and he absolutely stole the show. Infinity Wars brought everyone together for the first time. What I loved about this film was that it didn’t feel rushed or busy, which is surprising considering all the heroes that needed screen time. They created one of the best villains we’ve ever seen as he was driven by what he believed was right.

This movie was an amazing achievement, and still manages to tease so much more. Cheers Marvel, to the next 10 years.

3. Captain America Winter Soldier

Let’s be honest, the first Captain America film was boring. So I wasn’t too excited to watch the second one. Yep, I was wrong, this movie was fantastic. Like Iron Man, the MCU made Captain America a character you can get behind. He wasn’t preachy and he wasn’t boring, he was….badass. And I never thought I’d say that.

Then there was the Winter Soldier. He was amazing, and the only one thus far that could stand up to Cap. The decision to make S.H.I.E.L.D evil and have Hydra in it was bold, but it really turned the film into something memorable, and set the stage for future films to come. Plus, it made Marvel’s forgotten TV Agents of Shield better.

2. Captain America Civil War

This was the story everyone was waiting for. Seeing the inevitable battle between Captain America and Iron Man. Who was right? Whose side do you stand on? While I know I’d firmly be with Cap, the film did a great job at showing the positives of both sides. Seeing our favourite Avengers fight against each other was amazing. That airport scene honestly put all other super hero films to shame. When I watched this film, I didn’t think anything could be better, until…

1. Black Panther

Black Panther. This movie changed my life, and many others I’d like to think. Never had there been a film like this one, and I hope to see many more. Michael B. Jordans’ character was the most compelling, the most vicious and the most understandable villain of all time. While his methods were cruel, his reasoning was completely understandable.

Black Panther was a standout character from Civil War, so The MCU introduced us to the world of Wakanda. Casting amazing talent from Daniel Kaluuya and Angela Bassett to Forest Whitaker and Lupita Nyong’o. Wakanda was a place of wonder, freedom, strength and unity. This was a beautiful thing to see for Black people, as it’s so rarely explored in films. If only we could have heroes of all races in the MCU.
