Black Mirror Season 5 Trailer Review

After much anticipation, Black Mirror is back, and seemingly better than ever! We’ve been given a trailer for season 5, and as usual, there’s a lot to talk about.

Season 4 of Black Mirror aired back in 2017 leaving us begging for more. It took awhile, but Black Mirror answered our prayers with the complex and ever changing story of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Love it, hate it or just flat out confused by it, Bandersnatch gave us a taste of the Black Mirror that we’d all come to love and miss. But it wasn’t enough. We needed more. I personally wanted a taste of the magic that made Black Mirror so great.

Ask and you shall receive, as the trailer for season 5 just dropped. And my, what a trailer it is. Season 5 is going back to the roots of season 1 with a 3-episode story that seems to all have the same overarching theme – loneliness. Each character experiences it, whether it’s having no friends in high school, being in a failed marriage, or a celebrity who’s constantly surrounded by people yet feels alone.

Featuring an all-star cast of Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin, this show seems to be more of a superhero mashup than anything else.

As per usual, technology is in the forefront of the show as it drives each character that’s dealing with their own form of loneliness. This trailer highlights the concerning role that an A.I takes on as it fills the void of friendship, how to differentiate the virtual world from reality, and a discussion on the presence of social media, whether it be good or bad. In a world that’s so integrated and connected, our characters seem to be isolated more than ever.

I’m interested to see where this season goes, and can’t wait to dive into each of the characters. Especially the one Cyrus is playing, as it seems to mimic reality a bit with her character being an over-the-top celebrity. At one point, her character is wearing a purple wig, the same wig, it seems, that the A.I has on when influencing the young lonely high school student. That’s just one of the many nuggets I’m sure this season has in store for us!
