It took me a bit of time to digest all of this news that recently released from Comic Con. But I’m back, I’m ready and I have thoughts.
With the ending of an era in Endgame, many thought Marvel would be taking a break, that they would be hanging up their capes so to speak.
Those people would be mistaken.
Marvel is showing no signs of slowly down. And to be honest, why should they? They’re at the top of their game and have recently acquired some of their best work with The X-Men. Now is the time to strike. And strike they are.
Thor 4: Love and Thunder
Natalie Portman is returning to Marvel. Jane Foster is back, and will take up the mantle to become the female Thor, a story fans will recognize as Jane has been known to be worthy once or twice in the comics. This news, while exciting brings up a few questions: How is Mjolnir back in action after being destroyed? Will her and Thor get back together? Is this film taking place after Guardians of The Galaxy 3, a film which we’re all hoping to see Thor join the Guardians? So many questions, so little time.
Starring the likes of Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Don Lee and Richard Madden, the MCU is expanding their world by bringing us celestial beings. This looks to be one of Marvel’s most ambitious project to date, as we really don’t know what to expect with these characters.
We’ve already been introduced to gods with Thor and have been introduced to their strongest character with Captain Marvel. I’m interested to see what The Eternals have to offer, especially since we’ve already met one in previous films. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He was a blink and you miss him type of character, a little purple dude by the name of Thanos.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced us to the Multiverse. Spider-Man: Far From Home brought the multiverse to the MCU. It’s only right that Doctor Strange, protector of our universe, take that idea home.
Into the multiverse we go!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Finally getting an Asian superhero, it only took my whole damn life! I’m glad Canadian actor Simu Liu is taking on the mantel for this character. While not much is known about his character, I’m interested to see how they bring out his internal conflict of being raised by an evil tyrant yet still wanting to be good.
Dead Characters Are Getting Films Also
Black Widow is getting her own standalone film which is exciting because, as a founding member of the MCU, it’s about time, but kind of bitter sweet since we know she’s dead. Her story is kind of already done in my eyes, but only time will tell.
Wanda and Vision are getting their own story over on Marvel’s new streaming platform, aka the reason Daredevil, The Punisher and Jessica Jones were so rudely cancelled and taken off of Netflix. Oh yeah….and The Iron Fist.
I’m assuming this is going to take place before the events of Infinity War, when Wanda and Vision were enjoying some alone time before being attacked by the children of Thanos. I’d like to see Vision utilize more of his powers. We know he’s all powerful, but never really got a chance to see it in action before he died. Perhaps, with this show, now we will.
And of course, Loki. He’s getting his own story to tell. I’m thinking it’ll be his adventures with the tesseract in the timeline he created from Endgame. Loki’s going to get into his own mischief before Cap comes along and corrects the timeline.
Falcon & Winter Soldier
I’m glad these two are teaming up together in this mini series. Actors Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are friends in real life, so their chemistry explodes on screen.
Now that Falcon has taken on the mantel of Captain America, I think he is going to rely heavily on Bucky to help him understand how to make this role his own. I’m looking forward to watching these two navigate a world where Cap is no longer the one calling the shots.
If I’m being honest, this is the news I’m most excited about. Blade is finally coming home.
To be fair, Wesley Snipes was amazing in Blade and Blade 2. Those are two of my favourite films to date, but I’m excited to see how a vampire hunter is going to make sense in the universe that the MCU has created thus far. How is that we’ve never heard of vampires until now? Is this something that was created by Hydra? Will he eventually work with any of the other characters?
Mahershala Ali is perfectly cast to step into this role; well done Marvel. While Snipes has left some big shoes to fill, if anyone’s up to the task, it’s an Academy Award winner like Mahershala Ali.
What do you think of Marvel’s Phase 4 news? What are you most excited about?
